THE PROCESS

Cabinets & Stone Surfaces

To begin the process of building your new kitchen, Ben meets with you at your home to go over the layout.  Ben can help you design your perfect kitchen or work with you on a design you already have in mind.  He will review your layout with you to ensure you get the best design that works with you and your lifestyle.

Cabinets:

Every kitchen begins with the highest quality wood.  Ben looks at each piece of lumber individually and hand selects only the best cuts to ensure each piece is free from twists, bows, and cuppage.

The lumber is 4 quarter rough wood, which is then rough cut to length and run through the jointer to create a flat board and square edge.  Each piece is planed to the proper thickness through a wood planer.

Once the wood is flat and smooth, the face frame materials are then cut to proper lengths for each cabinet and joined using a domino system for strength.  Cabinets are assembled using, dominos, wood glue and clamps for a strong bond.

The cabinet sides, bottoms and adjustable shelves are all made using 3/4” cabinet grade plywood (vs. MDF) for a stronger cabinet that will last a lifetime.  All shelves are fitted with a 1/4” maple nosing for an attractive finish.

Doors and drawer fronts are then built using the same processes.  Then all pieces get a final sanding before receiving the paint or stain finishes.

Drawer boxes are made from 5/8” poplar wood and are dove-tailed.  Drawer bottoms are made of baltic birch for a super strong drawer box.  All drawer boxes receive a clear coat finish inside and out.

Each cabinet is sprayed with lacquer pigmented paint for a tough finish or hand stained for stained finish, then finished with clear coat lacquer.

For final assembly, each cabinet is measured and proper fittings are installed.  Most cabinets are installed with soft close drawer slides and hinges for quiet closures, though customers can choose a different option if desired.  Additionally, each door and drawer receives a small rubber bumper to prevent the wood from touching.

Ben delivers and installs all cabinets and can install drawer pulls and knobs at time of installation if the customer wishes.  (Customers provide all cabinet pulls and knobs.)

Granite & Quartz:

The customer will choose their granite or quartz, typically at Boston Granite Exchange.  The stone is then ordered by Ben and it is delivered to his shop.  Ben meets with the customer at home to complete a template for precise measurements.

Ben cuts each piece from the stone slabs and polishes it to specifications.  Edges can be smooth or have a chiseled edge depending on your individual preference.

Sinks:

Ben will work with you to pick out the perfect sink. Ben orders your preferred sink so it arrives at shop in time for stone fabrication and will install it at your home at the time of the stone installation.

Granite or Quartz Backsplashes:

If you would like a backsplash, Ben can fabricate that for you from your granite or quartz for a perfect finishing touch.

Granite or Quartz Seams:

Most kitchens are large enough to require a seam or two.  Ben limits the seams to as few as possible, providing the stone can sustain its own weight (without breakage) for installation.  The idea is for the strongest piece of granite or quartz to last a lifetime.  Anytime a seam is necessary, very precise cuts are made and extra care is taken to create a virtually unnoticeable joint.
